My apologies on not making an article myself for a few days, rest assured I am back and ready to do more, starting with another Senate race, this time out of North Dakota. North Dakota is yet another state that went in the tank for Trump by a large margin during 2016, but again, has a Democratic Senator, providing another opportunity to take seats in the Senate.
Pundits have this race as a “toss-up”, however the most recent poll conducted has the Republican challenger beating the Democrat incumbent by a fairly sizable margin.
The Democratic incumbent is Heidi Heitkamp, who has held this seat since 2012. Before that, she was the Attorney General for the state of North Dakota. Politically, Heitkamp is a moderate Democrat, with data suggesting she’s voted in favor of Trump’s policies 53% of the time. Despite this, it’s likely she will still vote along with the party line, and follow the Democrat idea of being obstructionists to Trump’s agenda.
Policy-wise, she voted against Trump’s tax plan, however spoke out against Obamacare in 2012, has an “A” rating from the NRA indicating she is a strong supporter of Gun Rights, voted for Neil Gorsuch to be approved, and throughout 2017 met with several members of Trump’s cabinet, including Trump himself during a rally in which Trump praised her.
On a brief tangent, we need to prop up and support other moderate candidates such as this to create more dissent within the Democratic Party, as there is a major power struggle right now between the progressives i.e. Warren, Schumer etc., and the new blood moderates such as Heitkamp, Lamb, etc. This may potentially be covered in more detail in an operation that Capitalist Army members can conduct themselves in at a later date, a la Operation Barrel Roll.
Her sole challenger is Kevin Cramer, the current representative of North Dakota’s at-large house district, a position he too has held since 2012. Cramer was directly hired by Trump during his campaign to write up his energy plan, reducing regulation and most importantly pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord.
Policy-wise, as previously mentioned he is for reducing environmental regulations and red tape, supports cuts to the Food Stamps program, supported Trump’s travel ban, has voted repeatedly to repeal Obamacare, and has voted to oppose gun regulations.
Once again, this race is penned as a toss-up, and the polls seem very tight, with the most recent poll putting Cramer +4. (read here) Cramer is a great candidate based on his history with President Trump, however I won’t be too torn-up if we end up losing this race, as any blow to the “progressive” left is a good one in my eyes.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you stick around as very soon I will be upgrading my WordPress plan to allow for more to be done with this blog. I’ve already gotten started with an article written by a guest contributor, which I would recommend everyone check out.
